HAZARDOUS WASTE

Hazardous wastes, such as paint, pool chemicals, bug spray and household cleaning solvents, are t accepted in any landfill. These materials should t be placed in the trash or poured down the drain. If you are moving, you may discover that your moving company will t haul these types of products in their moving van, so some advanced planning during a move is important.

Disposal Program for Residents and Small Businesses
The next drop off event in Cupertino is in 2008. Call (408) 299-7300 to make an appointment.

The County runs a countywide program for disposal of toxic and otherwise hazardous waste that can be used by residents and eligible small businesses. Drop-off only, pick-up service is provided. There is charge to residents. Eligible small business can participate for a minal fee.

Appointments are necessary - Online appointments are available at www.hhw.org or call (408) 299-7300 for an appointment and for information about business eligibility requirements. Hazardous waste is accepted by the Program almost every Saturday, somewhere in the county.

For an appointment and information on dates and locations, visit www.hhw.org or call the countywide hotline: (408) 299-7300. (Be prepared to tell the operator what you have to dispose of, and how much.)

Free Home Maintenance Products
The permanent recyclable hazardous waste sites also include "re-use areas" where residents can take away, at charge, any of the "rescued" products that the staff has decided are usable and should t be disposed of.

Typical free products include: paint, thinners, pool chemicals, fertilizers, pesticides, aerosols, household cleaners and automotive products. Appointment is necessary to use the "re-use area." Call (408) 299-7300 for hours and locations. The nearest site is at the Sunnyvale Recycling Center, open the third Saturday of each month from 9 am. It is located at Borregas Avenue.

Rechargeable Battery Drop-Off Sites
Nickel-cadmium rechargeable batteries that longer accept a charge can be dropped off for recycling at any Radio Shack store. The nearest stores are located at 10215 South DeAnza Boulevard, Cuperti, and in Vallco Fashion Park. You can also recycle them in Target's Electronics Department. The Target Store is at 20745 Stevens Creek Boulevard, Cuperti.

Prescription and Over-The-Counter Prescription Drop Off Locations
When we throw medications down sinks, in toilets or in the trash, they enter the water supply and can't be filtered out. In addition to the Santa Clara County Household Hazardous Waste Program, you can drop off your unused medication (prescription and over-the-counter, but not controlled substances) for proper disposal at two pharmaceutical locations. These two pharmacies have decided to provide this ecological drug disposal program as a service to the community to protect our water supply. Medication can be dropped off at the following locations:
