FAQs

What is GIS?
A Geographic Information System ('GIS') can be defined as an organized collection of computer hardware, software, geographic data, and personnel designed to efficiently capture, store, update, manipulate, analyze, and display all forms of geographically referenced information. In a nutshell, geographic information systems 'activates' tabular information, in the form of an intelligent, dynamic map.

How can I access GIS information for the City of Cupertino?
Cupertino is working to develop mechanisms to allow Cupertino citizens, as well as the public at large, to view and analyze basic geographic information. Our initial approach has been to use the internet as a means to view this information - via a web browser. For more information, please check out our newly released GIS web application: City Map Guide.

How do I obtain Cupertino GIS data?
You can email us at gis@cupertino.org or call 408.777.3311.

Do I have to pay for GIS data?
Our City Map Guide internet application provides a free service to the public, however, the City of Cupertino does charge for value-added geoprocessing services. For example, if one wanted a map and data files of selected parcels with certain characteristics, in proximity to other facilities, in a specified format, etc, then the City will charge a service fee for processing the data plus materials. The City will also charge for ortho-rectified aerial photography and existing digital data layers on CDROM. For fee information or mapping requests, please contact us at gis@cupertino.org or 408.777.3311.

Can I use Cupertino's GIS information in a commercial product?
Users who wish to get a CDROM of our basemap information can fill out a copy of our Data Useage Agreement and fax/mail to us and we will respond. You may contact us for more information.

I need a specific type of map. Are their any graphic images that I can download and print?
Yes. We are constantly updating our archive of GIS maps. Check out our map archive page.

Who do I contact if I need additional information that is not included in this FAQ?
You may contact the GIS Coordinator at 408.777.3311, or gis@cupertino.org.
