Be a Volunteer

Disasters happen. The City can't manage them alone. Together, we can make a difference in the outcome!

Amateur Radio: Cupertino Amateur Radio Emergency Service provides emergency communications support and status reports to assist the City response efforts. Requirements: “CARES” meets on the first Thursday of every month at 7:30 p.m. in the Cupertino City Hall and holds several drills each year. www.cupertinoares.org

Block Leader: Point of contact in a neighborhood. Providing information and liaison with City Manager’s Office. Requirements: Registration with City Manager’s Office. Call 777-3331.

Community Emergency Response Team: Community members who are trained to support fire, law and ambulance responders, during disasters, and assist people manage the immediate aftermath. Requirements: Team commitment and ongoing free training required.

Communications & Documentation Team: Check in volunteers. Receive requests for assistance and assign to appropriate team. Document and communicate neighborhood status and needs to City Emergency Operations Center. (FRS and Ham Radio operators) Provide communications between teams in the field and the Incident Command Post.

Medical Reserve Corps: New program! Help us build our medical team! Community members, with a variety of skills, who increase the disaster medical response capability of the City. Members include CERT graduates, doctors, nurses, physicians assistants, mental health professionals, pharmacists, dentists and veterinarians. Requirements: Vary upon level of involvement and professional training. Ongoing free training available.

Neighborhood Watch: Work with the Sheriff’s Office to organize your neighborhood to be on the watch for suspicious activity. Requirements: Signature commitment of 80% of the identified neighborhood. Call 777-3310.

Phone Bank: Staff telephones to provide information and referral during emergencies. Requirements: Put name on a callout list.

Public Education: Prepare flyers, articles and other educational materials for publication and distribution –or- develop educational visual displays for community events –or- assist with website revisions –or- staff the Training Center so it’s open and available to the public –or- develop training materials –or- present training materials to groups. Flexible commitment.

American Red Cross Shelter Operations and Mass Care Classes: Help at City shelters after an emergency! The main requirements is the to maintain shelter operations certification and registration with the City.

School Preparedness Liaison: Work with Cupertino Emergency Services and assist a school with their emergency planning. Requirements: Agreement to assist school for the entire school year, as needed. Attend monthly meeting during school year 4th Tuesday 9:30-11:00 a.m.

Speaker Bureau: Develop public speaking skills to provide community preparedness outreach presentation. Requirements: Participation in free 10 week public speaking training and participate in at least one outreach event each year.

Technical Expert: Whatever you love to do, we can put to use! Requirements: We’ll decide together.

Translators: People who are willing to offer translation assistance during disasters or want to assist with translating printed preparedness materials for community outreach. Requirements: Put name on a callout list.

Special Note: All Cupertino Volunteers must be REGISTERED with the City in order to assist during emergencies. Registration forms are available at the Cupertino City Hall, 10300 Torre Ave.
