Recreation Leader - Summer Programs**

The City of Cupertino Parks and Recreation Department has openings in the following summer programs: preschool, youth, science, and nature camps. These are summer staff positions and do not include benefits.
POSITION: RECREATION LEADER - SUMMER PROGRAMS
part-time temporary, non-benefited position, maximum 995 hours per fiscal year
HOURS PER WEEK: 20 to 35 (approximate)
$10.00, $10.50, $11.00, $11.50, $12.00
Applicants with a high school diploma or GED equivalency will begin at step 3 of the salary schedule.

DEFINITION: Recreation Leaders work under supervision to conduct recreational activities, oversee volunteers, and perform other related work as required.
Recreation Leaders are responsible for planning, organizing, and leading a variety of recreation activities. Typical activities include, but are not limited to: arts, crafts, sports, games, trips, contests, and special events for a particular group of participants. Must be able to work with other Recreation Leaders and Senior Recreation Leaders to assist in implementing recreation activities and performing other related duties as required.
Experience facilitating outdoor and/or environmental educational experiences for children, working with groups of younger students, or having special skills in particular activities; knowledge of activities that appeal to particular age groups; ability to plan and lead such activities; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other
employees and participants; knowledge of safety precautions; and ability to maintain discipline are desirable.
* Must be 16 years of age by June 9, 2014
* A valid California Driver's License is desirable
* Must be CPR and First Aid certified (Certification and re-certification courses will be offered to new employees during staff In-Service Training week)
* Must be able to provide transportation to and from work

Applicants will be screened by: A) a review of their written application; B) an oral interview/group assessment; and C) State law requires that if your position will bring you into contact with minors you must complete a fingerprinted criminal history records check. D) Successful applicants will need to show proof of current T.B. test. E) Successful applicants must have current CPR and First Aid certification by June 13, 2014. F) Successful applicants may need to provide a DMV printout of their driver record prior to their Human Resource appointment.

June 9, 2014 – June 13, 2014. Employees are required to attend this paid training.
Summer Program Dates
Camp programs- June 16, 2014 – August 15, 2014. Employees are asked to work all nine weeks of summer programs as needed. Time off may be granted only under limited circumstances.
Friday, July 4, 2014 is a mandatory workday for all recreation staff.
If you are offered a position with the Parks and Recreation Department, CPR and First Aid certification is required. A certification/ re-certification course will be offered to new employees during the in-service training week listed above. If you cannot take these classes when offered, you may take these courses through the American Red Cross or American Heart Association at your own expense. Please check with the American Red Cross or American Heart Association for their current CPR and First Aid class schedule.
