General Municipal Elections in Cupertino are held in November of even numbered years. The elected officers of the City of Cupertino consist of five Councilmembers who are elected "at large" to overlapping four-year terms. The offices of Mayor and Vice Mayor are filled annually by election of the Councilmembers.

A General Municipal Election will be held Tuesday, November 6 to elect three Councilmembers each to a four-year term. Under Cupertino's term limits, Councilmember Darcy Paul and Savita Vaidhyanathan are eligible to run for one additional four-year term. Councilmember Barry Chang has served two consecutive four-year terms and is not eligible to run.

Information for Potential Candidates

Anyone who is a registered voter within the corporate limits of Cupertino is eligible to run for City Council. In order to be a registered voter in Cupertino in Santa Clara County, you must be a U.S. citizen, 18 years of age or older, and a Cupertino resident. 

The first step (after registering to vote) is to file an original Candidate Intention Statement, Form 501, with the Office of the City Clerk. You must file this before raising or spending any funds for your campaign.

The second step is to open a campaign committee by filing an original Statement of Organization Recipient Committee, Form 410, with the Secretary of State and a copy with the City Clerk. This form must be filed as soon as you either raise or spend $2,000.

The Nomination Period to pull papers to run for City Council opens Monday, July 16. Please make an appointment with the City Clerk and allow at least 45 minutes. The Nomination Paper must be signed by at least 20 and no more than 30 registered voters in Cupertino. The Nomination Period deadline to file the Nomination Paper and other documents is Friday, August 10. The Nomination Period will be extended to Wednesday, August 15 if an incumbent who is eligible to run chooses not to do so.

The Role of the City Clerk


The Cupertino City Clerk oversees the election process, with particular emphasis on required candidate filings. This includes Nomination Papers, Statements of Economic Interest (also known as Conflict of Interest Statements), and Campaign Finance Disclosure forms. You may view the campaign disclosures online or purchase copies at 10 cents per page from the City Clerk's Office.

Information for Voters

The Santa Clara County Registrar of Voters web site provides County-wide, on-line information about voter registration, candidates' statements, and ballot measures.
